Father Hartness died about 6 o’clock on Monday the 23d.  The night before he was well and hearty and went to bed in good health. During the night he complained of being unwell and about 5 o’clock they sent for Dr. Crews. The Doctor did not think him dangerous, but in a few moments after he arrived he fell forward and died without a struggle. Father Hartness was born at Harpers Ferry, VA Jan 12, 1801; and up to his death was an unusually healthy man; was highly esteemed by every one who knew him, kind and obliging in his disposition; no one ever went to him for a favor but received it, if it were possible to do so.  He had been a member of the ME Church for upwards of 50 years. He was also a member of the Masonic fraternity by which order he was b uried. He leaves an aged widow, who will doubtless soon follow him to the better land and several children who today mourn the loss of a good and kind father. Thus one by one the old landmarks are removed and soon those who conquered the wilderness and made it blossom as the rose will be gone, and upon our shoulders will rest the affairs of the Government. A vast number of relatives and the whole community have been thrown into the deepest gloom by this mysterious provide3nce that has brought death to our very door. “Be ye also ready.” Toodles
